What is MSP®

The MSP® Course presents proven programme management best practice and its successful delivery.

Programme management can be explained as the coordination of the project portfolio and its governance leading to successful results. During the whole process it is necessary to recognize all the business benefits of the strategic importance of programme management. Programme management helps organizations to manage, tailor, and control changes to align the results with pre-determined business strategy objectives.

MSP® methodology is often used by organizations in the public or private sector.

Course objectives:

MSP® methodology is suitable for programmes of all kind or size and can be used everywhere the primary objective is to achieve insight into the business vision.
MSP® allows for example

Course content:

1) MSP® Principles

These are derived from positive and negative lessons learned from programme experiences. They are the common factors that underpin the success of any transformational change.

2) MSP® Governance Themes
These define an organization's approach to programme management. They allow an organization to put in place the right leadership, delivery team, organization structures and controls, giving the best chance for success.

3) MSP® Transformational Flow
This provides a route through the lifecycle of a programme from its conception through to the delivery of the new capability, outcomes and benefits.

MSP® Foundation exam

  • In the fourth day of the Course
  • Multiple choice
  • 70 questions per paper with 1 mark available per question
  • 35 marks required to pass (out of 70 available) - 50%
  • 60 minutes duration
  • Closed book.

MSP® Practitioner exam

  • In the fifth day of the Course
  • Objective testing
  • 8 questions per paper
  • 40 marks required to pass (out of 80 available) - 50%
  • Two-and-a-half hours duration
  • Open-book (only the MSP Guide is allowed).
  • In order to continue onto the Practitioner exam, a pass is required at Foundation

Pre-course preparation

It is recommended to follow the guidance provided for pre-course studying within about 20 hours. An MSP® Manual and Study Guide are included in the course. All materials are in English.



John Vivian is a project/programme manager with over 30 years' experience in managing high technology time-critical projects.
As well as being an accomplished consultant, he is also a skilled and successful trainer, coach and facilitator, able to effectively transfer his skills and experience, and to motivate staff at all levels. John trains students in the OGC's MSP and PRINCE2 frameworks as well as both PMI and APM based project management disciplines. He also teaches advanced project management courses in various topics including Risk Management, Business Case, Earned Value and Project Leadership.
John is particularly skilled at managing the development, introduction and implementation of new technology. He understands the entrepreneurial environment and is adept at managing, motivating and directing technical and specialist staff. He builds on experience gained in companies like DHL, Honeywell, Phillips, Cisco, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Credit Suisse, General Motors, Jaguar, OMV, Royal Air Force and many others.
